The ISS is the first of its kind to have a full view of Earth from space, and for the first time it is opening to the public.
The station is being used as a testbed for space station design, testing and exploration.
Here, BBC News’ James Baxley takes a look at what the future might hold.
The ISS is a world-famous destination.
It has seen astronauts from around the world go up there, as well as being used for research and for international space tourism.
It has also attracted a lot of attention, including the film Gravity, starring Brad Pitt and Mark Ruffalo.
However, for the next few months, it will be a test bed for the design of a new space station.
The first of the new space stations is the $400m ISS-3 in Kazakhstan, which will open to the world this autumn.
But this new design will have a few things in common with the one in Kazakhstan.
The biggest difference is that it will have no windows and windows will be removed.
What is the ISS?
The Space Station is a multi-million-dollar laboratory in the International Space Station that is used to test new designs for astronauts.
It is also a platform for astronauts to be sent up and to experiment in space.
In the United States, the Space Station will become the largest laboratory in orbit, home to the International Astronautical Federation (IAF).
At its peak, it housed astronauts and cosmonauts from around Earth and was home to Nasa’s Hubble Space Telescope.
Its predecessor was the Mir space station, which was home for the International Geophysical Year (IGY) in the late 1980s.
Currently, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) is conducting space flight trials, and in 2020, the ISS-2 will be re-launched to the ISS.
This will be the third time the ISS has opened for public viewing.
It will be used to perform science experiments, to test and monitor the design and operation of the International Spaceport on the Moon and the International Laboratory on Mars.
Why is it important to the space station?
This new station is designed to be a testing ground for new design of the ISS and is also home to a small space laboratory, the IGY Space Lab.
Inside the space lab, a small lab with only a few people inside, a space shuttle simulator and other equipment are being used.
There is a big difference between the space center and the ISS: the space in the space laboratory is much smaller, because it has been designed to house only a handful of people.
When it comes to the new station, this means that the space will be much smaller.
The space center is about twice the size of the space space station and will house about 5,000 people.
That is a huge reduction.
As well as the space simulator and small space lab inside the space capsule, there will be other space station hardware, including a new robot called the Dragon, which can test and measure the effects of a spacecraft on the station.
The ISS-1 space station was also designed to hold about 3,000 astronauts and was not designed for that.
And that is the biggest change.
Unlike the old space station that was a test and control centre, the new one is designed for a permanent space station of astronauts.
NASA wants to get this station to the station by 2023.
So how much does it cost?
A new station on the ISS costs $400 million (£290m).
It is built to withstand a 50-year journey in orbit.
If you want to put a small satellite into orbit, it needs to be able to withstand 10,000 pounds of thrust.
How much does the space agency pay for the ISS when it opens?
NASA is currently paying $400million (£290million) for the station and is hoping to spend another $1.2 billion (£1.3 billion) on development of the station itself.
It could also spend up to $2.4 billion (£2.8 billion) more on the hardware that will be required to get the station to orbit.
Is it possible for us to see the ISS from space?
Yes, it is possible to get a glimpse of the Space Hub, which is the largest section of the building, when it is fully operational.
